Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Montestefano 1967 Giovanni Rocca

This is a standard bottle with the regular label of the base Barbaresco, but it has an unusual hang tag which says it is from the Montestefano vineyard. The hang tag also identifies one of the Produttori members, Giovanni Rocca. [Traditionally, in Piedmont, the family name is listed first.] Note that the first regular bottling of the Montestefano cru by the Produttori was in 1971.

Aldo Vacca tells me, this is an original Produttori bottling. Montestefano was selected in 1967 as a Cru, but it was then decided not to release it as a Riserva officially and it was blended back in the standard Barbaresco. However at time of bottling some was bottled separately for the grower Rocca Giovanni who wanted it as a 'gift' for some of his friends or private customers. Then they printed and attached the little flier as a special mention. ... So the wine is most likely produced from Montestefano grapes, at least predominantly, but not officially.
