G. Conterno Barolo Riserva 1970

G. Conterno also made a 1970 Barolo from the Cagnazzo Giacinto vineyard in Serralunga. As well as a non-riserva 1970 Barolo.

The bottles below say "Cascina Francia" on the label, but these are NOT from the Francia vineyard. The Francia vineyard (which was referred to as "Cascina Francia" until 2010) was purchased by G. Conterno in 1974. It was not planted to vines at that time. These bottles contain the same wine as the bottles above.

In those days, even the best wineries in the region did not sell out of their wines quickly. The wine was left in barrel or in demijohns or in unlabeled bottles. Once it was kept long enough, it qualified as Riserva. When they sold this wine, they had run out of plain Barolo labels and only had the Barolo Cascina Francia labels that they started using with the 1979 Cascina Francia Riserva. So that was what they used. I have confirmed this with Roberto Conterno.
