1990 Giacosa Barolo Riserva Falletto with Chris Thile on FWG's Front Porch, Delmar, NY (10/16/2021)
Mandolin virtuoso
Chris Thile
played the
Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.
Chris is a serious Nebbiolo lover.
After his concert, he came over to our place to drink Nebbiolo.
Specifically, the 1990 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto Riserva. It was glorious.
Due to the coronavirus, we stayed outside on our front porch.
It was chilly, but we chatted on the porch until 2:30am.
Then I drove him to his hotel in Troy.

Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
[Double-decanted at 4:30pm for 2.5 hours.]
Upon opening, balsamic nose with hints of tar, licorice, and forest floor.
Sweet and tannic on the finish, but should open beautifully with air.
[Drunk from 11pm till 3am with Chris Thile on my porch after his concert at the Troy Music Hall.]
Opened up into its full glory. A wow wine. Stunning nose of tar, black fruit, and roses.
In the mouth, it is silky and sexy. Tannins are still present, but softened.
The finish seems to last forever.
Palate shows juicy red fruits, forest floor, and a hint of orange peel.
A lovely wine to sit and savor over the evening. (99 points)

The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall required proof of vaccine or a negative test result.

Chris shows his mad skillz:
Chris ends the concert with an a cappella sing-a-long.
[Very quiet for the first 10 seconds.]
Conclusion
Great concert. Great wine. Great conversation. What more could one want?
Chris and I had met at a
wonderful dinner in NYC put on by our mutual friend Ed Zimmerman.
We had dinner again in Troy, NY,
after a Punch Brothers' show at this same Troy Music Hall.
